SafeNet Rx

Drug Donation Repository

Ordering

We receive and process donations daily. You may view our current inventory here. Once your organization has enrolled to receive medications, our inventory will be available for order via an online form.  Please note that we do not distribute controlled substances, products requiring refrigeration or those subject to REMS criteria with an element to assure safe use OR an implementation system.

Generally, you should receive everything on your order. There are certain medications that are in very high demand that we have to limit, but we make an effort to fulfill each order as best we can.

You may submit as many orders as you need.  Some partners prefer to submit one large order.  Others prefer to submit one order per patient. All orders placed before 4:30PM on Wednesday will be shipped together the following Monday.

Yes, the SafeNetRx Drug Donation Repository is currently free for all of our partners.

Click here to view our inventory and order medications. If you do not know your login, please email us at repository@safenetrx.org or give us a call at 515-327-5405.

This means the medication is currently unavailable. We receive and process donations daily so make sure to check back at a later time to see if the needed medication is in stock. Feel free to print and give this medication discount card to your patients when a specific medication is unavailable through the repository!

Orders are shipped each Monday and typically take 1-2 business days for our partners to receive.  Orders submitted before 4:30PM on Wednesdays should ship the following Monday.  Orders submitted after 4:30PM on Wednesdays cannot be guaranteed for shipment the following Monday.

Compliance

Yes, forty-one US states and territories have passed legislation to allow for the collection and distribution of unused medicine. If you reside in a state where drug donation laws have not been adopted, you can still legally donate unused medicine and supplies to SafeNetRx. In addition, the World Health Organization has established international guidelines for donated medicine.

SafeNetRx requires you keep Patient Intake Forms on file for five years following dispensing of donated medicines.  Additionally, per the Iowa Administrative Code 8.7(6), All pharmacies shall maintain supplier invoices of prescription drugs upon which the actual date of receipt of the drugs by the pharmacist or other responsible individual is clearly recorded. Pharmacy records of shipments shall be maintained for at least two years from the date of the record.

Donated medications must be labeled appropriately before dispensing to patients. Take a look at our labeling template for more guidance. In addition to labeling, consider printing drug information material for your patient. Patient-friendly drug monographs can be found here. Contact SafeNetRx at repository@safenetrx.org for additional guidance and ask about our Sample Handling Procedures to assist with policy development for your organization.

Medications ordered from SafeNetRx may only be dispensed to eligible patients that complete a Patient Intake Form.  Patient Eligibility Requirements include:

  • Living in the state of Iowa
  • Annual household income at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level
  • Unable to afford their prescribed medication regardless of insurance status

SafeNetRx requires you to report back quarterly the number of patients you served using donated medication and the quantity of donated medications you dispensed. We also ask for any compelling patient stories we can share with our funders.

Our rules and regulations require us to maintain the privacy and confidentiality of any donation that has patient information.  We take this obligation very seriously and have strict protocols in place.  We prefer to remove the HIPAA information ourselves as this sometimes contains required information about the drug and expiration date.  When registering, each organization has the opportunity to sign a business agreement regarding donations with HIPAA information still attached.

SafeNetRx will keep a copy of your registration on hand.  We do not require you to keep any documentation of donations, but we encourage you to take a look at your state's prescription drug return, reuse and recycling laws to ensure you are in compliance.

Individual Drug Donations

We’ll email you a completed copy of your donation form to print and send with your donation.  If you do not see it right away, check to see if it ended up in your junk mail.  If you do not have access to a printer, please include a piece of paper with your name and the date you submitted the donation form with your shipment.  We will not "approve" your donation before you mail it, but we will reach out if we notice a problem with your donation form.

Box up eligible medication along with your completed donation form and send it to this address:

  • SafeNetRx
  • 1500 SE 19th Street, Suite 530

Cost & Billing

Pricing is based on the availability of the medication through our Drug Donation Repository. In an effort to serve as many patients across Iowa as possible, we fill mostly 30-day supply prescriptions.  We charge a dispensing fee of $5 for generic prescriptions and $15 for brand-name prescriptions and larger bulky items.

Payment is due before prescriptions are shipped out.  Debit/credit or ACH payment is required. Payment may be called in OR an electronic invoice may be emailed to you that allows you to securely enter your payment information online.

Dispensing fees may be covered by the patient or their provider.
