Drug Donation Repository

Ordering

Unfortunately, we cannot control which products are donated to us.  This means we do not have an exhaustive list of available medications on hand at all times.  Once you sign up, our inventory is available to view online.  Please note that we do not distribute controlled substances, products requiring refrigeration or those subject to REMS criteria with an element to assure safe use OR an implementation system.

No, orders are filled on a first come, first serve basis.  Even though it stated the medication was available when you submitted your order, it may no longer be in stock when we process your order.  We frequently check our incoming donations in an effort to fulfill each order as best we can.

You may submit as many orders as you need.  Some partners prefer to submit one large order.  Others prefer to submit one order per patient. All orders placed before 4:30PM on Wednesday will be shipped together the following Monday.

Yes, the SafeNetRx Drug Donation Repository is currently free for all of our partners.

We receive donations daily - If a medication you are looking for is not listed in our inventory still add it to your order and we will check our incoming donations in an effort to fulfill your order.

Orders are shipped each Monday and typically take 1-2 business days for our partners to receive.  Orders submitted before 4:30PM on Wednesdays should ship the following Monday.  Orders submitted after 4:30PM on Wednesdays cannot be guaranteed for shipment the following Monday.

Compliance

Yes, thirty-nine US states and territories have passed legislation to allow for the collection and distribution of unused medicine. If you reside in a state where drug donation laws have not been adopted, you can still legally donate unused medicine and supplies to SafeNetRx. In addition, the World Health Organization has established international guidelines for donated medicine.

SafeNetRx requires you keep Patient Intake Forms on file for five years following dispensing of donated medicines.  Additionally, per the Iowa Administrative Code 8.7(6), All pharmacies shall maintain supplier invoices of prescription drugs upon which the actual date of receipt of the drugs by the pharmacist or other responsible individual is clearly recorded. Pharmacy records of shipments shall be maintained for at least two years from the date of the record.

Medications ordered from SafeNetRx may only be dispensed to eligible patients that complete a Patient Intake Form.  Patient Eligibility Requirements include:

  • Living in the state of Iowa
  • Annual household income at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level
  • Uninsured or under-insured meaning they cannot afford their prescription co-pay

Yes, individuals may visit our Individual Donation page to fill out the documentation required to donate directly to us.

How it works

We believe in the safety of our patients. Because of this, we do not accept items that are expired, controlled, opened, refrigerated, or those that are subject to REMS criteria with an element to assure safe use OR an implementation system.

Once your organization is registered, one of our staff members will contact you to discuss shipping procedures. We collaborate with each organization individually to come up with a plan that works best for you.

Yes, unused items such as diabetic supplies, nebulizers supplies, bandage materials and wound care are always greatly appreciated by the clinics we work with.

Our rules and regulations require us to maintain the privacy and confidentiality of any donation that has patient information.  We take this obligation very seriously and have strict protocols in place.  We prefer to remove the HIPAA information ourselves as this sometimes contains required information about the drug and expiration date.  When registering, each organization has the opportunity to sign a business agreement regarding donations with HIPAA information still attached.

SafeNetRx will keep a copy of your registration on hand.  We do not require you to keep any documentation of donations, but we encourage you to take a look at your state's prescription drug return, reuse and recycling laws to ensure you are in compliance.

Charitable Pharmacy

Cost & Billing

Pricing is based on availability of the medication.  A staff member will go over a price quote with you before prescriptions are filled.  Generally, the medication will be free and you will only need to cover an administrative fee.  These fees are typically $3 per one month supply and $6 per three month supply.

Payment is due before prescriptions are shipped out.  Debit/credit is the preferred method of payment for timely shipping, but we do accept checks, money orders, and cash by mail if needed. Payment may be called in OR an electronic invoice may be emailed to you that allows you to securely enter your payment information online.

Administrative fees may be covered by the patient or their provider.

Eligibility

We receive medications from a variety of different programs which all have different eligibility requirements.  The application we have you fill out will help us determine which programs you are eligible for.  In general, you must have an Iowa address and have an annual household income at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level.

Apply online!  You will need to provide documentation of income.  Acceptable documents include a recent tax return, W-2 form, paycheck stub, or letter from your employer showing compensation.

Some of our programs allow us to dispense donated medications to individuals even if you have active insurance.  We will discuss which medication options are available to you and the pricing before we fill your prescriptions.  Please note that we are unable to bill your insurance company for donated medications.

You must re-apply for the charitable pharmacy annually to ensure you are still eligible to receive donated medicines.

Perscriptions

Prescriptions are shipped Monday through Thursday via USPS to any Iowa address including PO boxes.  Delivery typically takes 3-5 business days.  If you need to know the status of your shipment, send us a message at pharmacy@safenetrx.org and we will send you your tracking information.

At this time, we do not carry insulin or any medication that requires refrigeration. We receive test strips through our Drug Donation Repository, but cannot guarantee a constant supply.  Send us a message at pharmacy@safenetrx.org and we will check to see if we have your needed test strips.

No, we do not fill ANY controlled substance prescriptions.

We can always check to see if your medication is available through our wholesalers.  If ordering the medication is an option, we would charge you our cost of the medication with no markup.  If this still does not seem like a good option for you, we have a drug discount card that you may take to a pharmacy near you.

We receive inhalers through our Drug Donation Repository, but cannot guarantee a constant supply.  Send us a message at pharmacy@safenetrx.org and we will check to see if we have your needed inhaler.
